CHAPTER 11 Sneaking out of the penthouse under a vampire's nose was infinitely easier when the vampire was nowhere to be seen. Jesse noticed Gideon's shoes and jacket were near the door, so he was fairly certain Gideon had returned home, but he hadn't come to bed. And he wasn't in the guest bedroom. Jesse assumed he was in the dungeon, but he didn't want to risk looking and waking him up.
Jesse had gone to bed the night before with every intention of going to the forbidden party, but by the time they were dressed and ready to leave, the party seemed pretty insignificant. He just wanted to get out of the penthouse for a few hours. Emma apparently felt the same way, because she didn't offer any argument. She just quietly dressed and folded her fingers around his as they slipped out the door.
It was surprisingly warm in the park. It felt more like autumn than winter. It was the sort of day that made you glad to be alive, but not even the warm sun and the mellow blue sky could boost Jesse's spirits. They walked through the park slowly, hand in hand, but Jesse's mind was still in the penthouse.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Emma asked gently. For a moment, Jesse wanted to tell her everything. He wanted to tell her about the pictures he was still carrying. He
wanted to show her Mary. He wanted to tell her about the meal with Marcus. But he couldn't. If Gideon ever found out, and if Gideon learned Emma knew the whole time, there would be hell to pay.
"I don't know. I just wish I knew what was going on in his head. I'm not usually at a complete loss."
She sighed and nestled closer into his side, resting her cheek against his arm as they continued to walk. "He seemed so much better yesterday. Like he was finally starting to relax. He felt like ... he felt like those first few weeks after Lizzie got arrested. When you guys didn't have an active case, and he was spending all that time trying to make it up to you for the displays."
Jesse smiled at the memory. Gideon hadn't wasted any time in those weeks, as though he intended to replace every second of every negative memory with his touch. By the time they did get a new case to distract Gideon's attention, the art displays had been a very distant and vague memory. And Gideon had gone to the trouble for one simple reason. Jesse was his.
"Either he has a good reason that he just doesn't want to share with me, for whatever reason. Or he doesn't have a good reason and he's just being extra controlling this week. I'm not sure which one is worse."
"He thinks he's protecting you. That much is obvious."
"Yeah. It is. But he could save us both a lot of trouble if he trusted me to tell me what he's protecting me ... us .
